The Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), Southeast Asia's premier film event, is thrilled to announce the dates for its 35th edition, scheduled from Thursday, November 28, to Sunday, December 8, 2024. This milestone edition will build upon the successes of the previous year, particularly the unprecedented showcase of Singaporean filmmaking talent.
The 34th SGIFF in 2023 was a landmark year, featuring over 100 films and achieving a record number of Singaporean selections in its Asian Feature Film Competition since 1997. The festival opened with the critically acclaimed "Tiger Stripes," further highlighting the vibrant narratives emerging from the region. This strong performance underscores SGIFF's pivotal role in elevating local and regional voices onto the international stage, setting an exciting precedent for the upcoming 35th edition.
Since its establishment in 1987 by Geoffrey Malone and L. Leland Whitney, SGIFF has been a steadfast champion of Asian cinema, fostering a dynamic film culture across the region. The introduction of the Silver Screen Awards in 1991 cemented its status as the first Asian international film festival to feature a competitive segment for Asian feature films and Singapore short films. Despite a brief hiatus from 2012 to 2013, SGIFF has consistently served as a crucial platform for nurturing emerging talents and celebrating the rich tapestry of cinematic storytelling.
The festival's illustrious history includes showcasing works by legendary filmmakers such as Akira Kurosawa, Zhang Yimou, Edward Yang, Takeshi Kitano, Wong Kar-wai, and Tsai Ming-liang, alongside contemporary masters like Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Anthony Chen, reinforcing its position as a beacon for cinematic excellence in Southeast Asia.
The 35th SGIFF continues under the dedicated leadership of Executive Director Emily J. Hoe and Programme Director Thong Kay Wee. Their unwavering commitment to fostering dialogue, promoting independent cinema, and nurturing new talent remains at the forefront of the festival's mission. "We are immensely proud of the growing strength of Asian cinema, especially the breakthroughs we've seen from Singaporean filmmakers," states Emily J. Hoe. "This year, we look forward to presenting a program that not only entertains but also inspires and connects audiences with diverse narratives."
