Vietnamese cinema celebrates a remarkable new talent in 2023 with "Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell" (Bên trong vỏ kén vàng), the captivating debut feature from director Phạm Thiên Ân. The film has already garnered significant international recognition for its unique vision and profound themes.


Synopsis: After his sister-in-law dies in a motorcycle accident and his five-year-old nephew miraculously survives, Thien is tasked with taking the boy back to their rural hometown to find his long-lost older brother. This journey becomes a spiritual quest for Thien, as he grapples with questions of faith, memory, and the meaning of life amidst the lush, dreamlike landscapes of Vietnam. The film is a meditative and visually stunning exploration of grief, belief, and existential searching.

Phạm Thiên Ân is a Vietnamese filmmaker whose short film "Stay Awake, Be Ready" (2019) won the Short Film Palme d'Or at Cannes Directors' Fortnight. "Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell" marks his highly anticipated feature directorial debut, showcasing his distinctive slow cinema style and his ability to craft deeply immersive and contemplative narratives. He is quickly establishing himself as a significant voice in Southeast Asian cinema.


The film premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, where it won the prestigious Camera d'Or (Best First Feature Film). It continued its successful festival run, notably winning the Best Asian Feature Film at the 34th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) in December 2023.
