Malaysian cinema made a bold statement in 2023 with "Tiger Stripes," the electrifying debut feature from director Amanda Nell Eu. This unique coming-of-age horror film has already made waves on the international festival circuit.

The film follows Zaffan, a spirited 12-year-old girl navigating the complexities of puberty in a rural Malaysian community. As she experiences mysterious physical changes, her body begins to transform in terrifying and unexpected ways, leading to fear, ostracization, and a struggle for self-acceptance. Blending body horror with folklore, "Tiger Stripes" is a powerful allegory for female adolescence and societal pressures.

"Tiger Stripes" premiered at the 62nd Critics' Week (Semaine de la Critique), a parallel section of the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, where it won the prestigious Grand Prize. It was also selected as the opening film for the 34th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) in November 2023, further cementing its status as one of the year's most exciting and original debut films.

The film has been met with enthusiastic critical acclaim, praised for its striking originality, bold visual style, and its unique blend of horror and incisive social commentary. Eu's confident and visceral direction masterfully uses body horror elements as a potent metaphor for the anxieties and transformations of female puberty. The film's vibrant energy, infused with elements of Malaysian folklore, creates an unsettling yet captivating atmosphere.

Critics have also lauded the raw and compelling performance of its young lead, Zafreen Zairal, and the film's ability to tackle themes of female empowerment, tradition, and identity with a fresh, genre-bending perspective, making it a truly unsettling and memorable debut.

Amanda Nell Eu is a Malaysian filmmaker whose short films, such as "It's Easier to Raise Cattle" (2017), have screened at various international festivals, including Venice and Clermont-Ferrand. "Tiger Stripes" marks her highly anticipated feature directorial debut, showcasing her distinctive voice and her willingness to explore challenging themes through a genre lens. She is quickly establishing herself as a significant new talent in Southeast Asian cinema.
