37th Tokyo International Film Festival Unveils Program and Distinguished Jury

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) today proudly unveiled the full lineup for its highly anticipated International Competition section, featuring 15 compelling films poised to capture global attention. The festival also announced the distinguished members of its International Competition Jury, who will bring their expertise to select this year's award winners.


Set to take place from October 28 to November 6, 2024, the 37th TIFF will once again transform Tokyo's Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza area into a dynamic hub for cinema. This edition promises a rich and diverse program, reinforcing TIFF's position as a vital platform for international film. A total of 208 films will be screened throughout the festival, offering a comprehensive look at contemporary cinema.


From a robust pool of 2,023 entries from 110 countries and regions, 15 outstanding feature films have been selected for the International Competition. These films will compete for the coveted Tokyo Grand Prix and other significant awards.


The films competing are:

  • "Adios Amigo" (Colombia) directed by Iván David Gaona

  • "Big World" (China) directed by Yang Lina

  • "Bury Your Dead" (Brazil) directed by Marco Dutra

  • "Cadet" (Kazakhstan) directed by Adilkhan Yerzhanov

  • "Daughter's Daughter" (Taiwan) directed by Huang Xi

  • "The Englishman's Papers" (Portugal) directed by Sergio Graciano

  • "In His Own Image" (France) directed by Thierry de Peretti

  • "Lust in the Rain" (Japan, Taiwan) directed by Shinzo Katayama

  • "My Friend An Delie" (China) directed by Dong Zijian

  • "Papa" (Hong Kong) directed by Philip Yung

  • "Promise, I'll Be Fine" (Slovakia, Czech Republic) directed by Katarína Gramatová

  • "She Taught Me Serendipity" (Japan) directed by Ohku Akiko

  • "Teki Cometh" (Japan) directed by Yoshida Daihachi

  • "Traffic" (Romania, Belgium, Netherlands) directed by Teodora Ana Mihai

  • "The Unseen Sister" (China) directed by Midi Z


In addition to the competitive sections, the 37th TIFF features several other compelling categories:

  • Asian Future: This competitive section highlights 10 films from emerging Asian directors, all world premieres.

  • Women's Empowerment Section: A new initiative in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, featuring films by female directors and discussions on women's roles in cinema.

  • Gala Selection: Premiering the latest films ahead of their Japanese release.

  • World Focus: Presenting 9 notable works from international film festivals, including a special Director in Focus on Nanni Moretti and a tribute to Marcello Mastroianni.

  • Animation: Featuring 12 films, including recent Japanese masterworks and acclaimed international animated works.

  • Nippon Cinema Now: Showcasing 12 new and recent Japanese films, with a special program highlighting the works of director Irie Yu.


This year, the International Competition Jury will be presided over by the internationally acclaimed Hong Kong actor and singer Tony Leung, known for his iconic performances in films like In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express.


He will be joined by:

  • Enyedi Ildikó (Hungarian Director): A multi-award-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker, celebrated for works such as My 20th Century and On Body and Soul.

  • Hashimoto Ai (Japanese Actress): A highly regarded actress who gained significant attention for her roles in films like Confessions and The Kirishima Thing, and has a diverse career spanning film, television, and theater.

  • Further jury members will be announced shortly, bringing a breadth of global perspectives to the evaluation process.


The 37th TIFF is poised to be a landmark event, celebrating cinematic artistry and fostering meaningful connections within the international film community.
