35th Tokyo International Film Festival Unveils Star-Studded Competition Lineup and International Jury

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) today announced the highly anticipated lineup for its main International Competition section, featuring 15 diverse and compelling films from around the globe. Alongside the film selections, the festival also revealed the distinguished members of its International Competition Jury, who will decide the recipients of the prestigious Tokyo Grand Prix and other awards.
The 35th TIFF is set to captivate audiences from October 24 to November 2, 2022, across the vibrant Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza area of Tokyo. Following the earlier announcement of opening film Fragments of the Last Will and closing film Living, the unveiling of the competitive selections marks a significant milestone as the festival prepares for its full-scale physical return.
The International Competition: 15 Films Vying for Top Honors
Selected from 1,695 submissions from 107 countries and regions, the 15 films in the International Competition represent a powerful cross-section of contemporary global cinema. Eight of these films will be making their World Premiere at TIFF, underscoring the festival's role in introducing new cinematic voices to the world.
The films competing for the Tokyo Grand Prix are:

The Esteemed International Jury
Presiding over the International Competition Jury is acclaimed American director and writer Julie Taymor. Known for her groundbreaking work across theater, opera, and film, including the Broadway phenomenon The Lion King and films like Frida and Across the Universe, Taymor brings a wealth of artistic vision and experience to the role.
She will be joined by a distinguished panel of international film luminaries:
Shim Eun-kyung (South Korean actress): A celebrated talent known for her roles in hit films such as Sunny and Miss Granny, and a recipient of the Japan Academy Prize for Best Actress.
João Pedro Rodrigues (Portuguese director): An internationally renowned filmmaker whose works, exploring themes of gender and human desire, have premiered and won awards at major festivals worldwide, including Cannes, Venice, Locarno, Toronto, and Berlin.
Katsumi Yanagishima (Japanese cinematographer): A highly respected director of photography with credits on over 70 films, notably collaborating with Takeshi Kitano on 16 projects and a multiple Japan Academy Film Prize winner.
Marie-Christine de Navacelle (French cultural curator and film programmer): A prominent figure in cultural institutions, she previously served as the Director of the French Institute in Tokyo and was instrumental in creating the "Cinema du Reel" documentary film festival at the Pompidou Center in Paris.
The festival looks forward to a vibrant and engaging 35th edition, celebrating cinematic artistry and fostering global connections.
