35th Tokyo International Film Festival Concludes; 'The Beasts' Takes Top Honor

The 35th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) successfully concluded, drawing to a close a vibrant 10-day celebration of global cinema. Held from October 24 to November 2, 2022, the festival brought filmmakers and film enthusiasts together across the Hibiya-Yurakucho-Ginza area, showcasing a diverse program of 169 films.


The Closing Ceremony, held at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya, was a testament to the festival's triumphant return to a full-scale physical event, culminating in the announcement of this year's prestigious award winners.


International Competition

The esteemed International Competition Jury, led by American director and writer Julie Taymor, presented the following awards:

  • Tokyo Grand Prix: "The Beasts" (Spain, France) directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen.

  • Special Jury Prize: "World War III" (Iran) directed by Houman Seyedi.

  • Award for Best Director: Rodrigo Sorogoyen for "The Beasts."

  • Award for Best Actress: Aline Kuppenheim for "1976" (Chile, Argentina).

  • Award for Best Actor: Denis Menochet for "The Beasts."

  • Award for Best Artistic Contribution: "Peacock Lament" (Sri Lanka, Italy) directed by Sanjeewa Pushpakumara, recognized for its exceptional artistic elements.

  • Audience Award: "by the window" (Japan) directed by Rikiya Imaizumi, chosen by festivalgoers.


Asian Future Section Award

  • Asian Future Best Film Award: "Butterflies Live Only One Day" (Iran) directed by Mohammadreza Vatandoust, recognizing an emerging talent from Asia.


Special Awards and Tributes

The 35th TIFF also honored significant figures in cinema:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Presented to Nogami Teruyo, a renowned Japanese production manager, for her invaluable contributions to the film industry.

  • Kurosawa Akira Awards: Bestowed upon two visionary filmmakers, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Fukada Koji, celebrating their profound impact on cinema.


The festival saw enthusiastic attendance, with audiences embracing the opportunity to experience a wide array of films and engage with filmmakers. The success of the 35th edition reaffirms Tokyo's position as a vital hub for international film and cultural exchange.
