34th Singapore International Film Festival Concludes, 'Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell' Wins Top Award

The 34th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) successfully concluded its 11-day run today, celebrating the power of cinema from November 30 to December 10, 2023. The festival presented a rich and diverse program of 101 films from 50 countries, offering an unparalleled cinematic experience to audiences.
Under the continued leadership of Executive Director Emily J. Hoe and Programme Director Thong Kay Wee, this edition of SGIFF built on its legacy as Southeast Asia's longest-running film festival. A significant highlight was the record number of Singaporean films selected in competition, underscoring the festival's pivotal role in elevating local and regional voices. The program featured compelling films across sections like 'Singapore Panorama,' 'Horizon,' 'Standpoint,' and 'Landmark,' which included the acclaimed "Tiger Stripes" as the opening film.
The festival culminated in the prestigious Silver Screen Awards ceremony, where an esteemed international jury recognized outstanding achievements in Asian and Southeast Asian cinema.
Asian Feature Film Competition:
Best Asian Feature Film: "Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell" (Vietnam, Singapore, France, Spain) directed by Phạm Thiên Ân.
Best Director: Yoon Eun-kyung for "The Tenants" (South Korea).
Best Performance: Yang Kuei-mei for "A Journey In Spring" (Taiwan).
Best Screenplay: Yu Yi-hsun for "A Journey In Spring" (Taiwan).
Special Mention: "Dreaming & Dying" (Singapore, Indonesia) directed by Nelson Yeo.
FIPRESCI Award: "The Tenants" (South Korea) directed by Yoon Eun-kyung.
Southeast Asian Short Film Competition:
Best Southeast Asian Short Film: "The River That Never Ends" (Philippines).
Best Singapore Short Film: "I look into the mirror and repeat to myself" (Singapore).
Best Director: Sam Manacsa for "Cross My Heart and Hope To Die" (Philippines).
Best Performance: Fredy Sreudeman Wowor in "Of Other Tomorrows Never Known" (Indonesia).
Special Mention: "Dikit" (Philippines) by Gabriela Serrano.
The 34th SGIFF further cemented its role as a vital hub for film professionals and enthusiasts, fostering critical dialogue and celebrating the vibrant landscape of international filmmaking.
