Cinematographer Justin Ivan Hong Returns as Director of Photography for 97th Academy Awards Winners' Portraits

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has appointed Singaporean Cinematographer Justin Ivan Hong as Director of Photography for the exclusive winners' portraits at the upcoming 97th Academy Awards. This prestigious role marks the second consecutive year that Hong will be capturing the iconic moments of triumph for Oscar recipients immediately after they step off the Dolby Theatre stage. He had taken on the role previously for the 96th Academy Awards in 2024.
His return underscores the Academy's profound confidence in Hong's exceptional talent and his unique ability to translate the raw emotion of an Oscar win into timeless visual artistry. His keen eye for evocative imagery and profound understanding of light and emotion have distinguished his work across various cinematic projects.

The winners' portraits are a cherished tradition at the Academy Awards, offering a unique glimpse into the immediate aftermath of an Oscar win. These images often become indelible parts of cinematic history, encapsulating the joy, relief, and profound significance of the achievement.

Born and raised in Singapore, Justin Ivan Hong developed a passion for visual storytelling early in his life through still photography. After establishing a successful career in his home country, he was invited to be a Cinematography fellow at the prestigious American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory in Los Angeles.
Some of his filmography includes notable works such as The Buddhist, I Love New York, and Black Friday
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
